The asymmetric waistline is the design feature you’ll notice first, but the fabric is what makes this skirt actually wear well. Mr Winston’s Modal Asymmetric-Waist Maxi uses a modal-blend fabric that drapes closer to silk than cotton — soft, slightly cling, doesn’t crease when packed in a suitcase. This page focuses on what modal actually is and why it changes how this skirt feels and ages.
What Modal Is (Fibre Origin)
Modal is a semi-synthetic fibre derived from beech tree pulp. The wood is broken down into cellulose, then re-spun into a smooth, continuous filament — the result is a plant-based fibre that performs more like silk than cotton. It’s been around since the 1950s but has surged in fashion popularity over the past decade as silk alternatives became more sought-after.
What modal isn’t: synthetic polyester, viscose, or rayon — those are different fibre families with different properties. Modal sits between natural cotton and synthetic silk in feel and performance.
Five Properties That Matter for This Skirt
- Drape: Modal hangs in soft folds rather than holding shape — gives the skirt its fluid, almost-liquid movement
- Stretch: The elastane blend (small percentage) gives subtle stretch through the waist and hip without making the fabric stretchy-looking
- Wrinkle resistance: Modal fibres recover from creasing within 5-10 minutes of being unpacked or unfolded — major reason this travels well
- Colour retention: Modal absorbs dye deeply and holds saturation through more wash cycles than cotton
- Temperature: Breathes better than synthetic, holds warmth less than cotton — works across more weather conditions
The Asymmetric Waist Detail
The waistline doesn’t sit straight across the natural waist — instead it angles diagonally, with side-rouching that creates a soft gather at the hip. This does two things visually:
- Visual interest at the waist — breaks up what would otherwise be a flat horizontal line, adds movement
- Forgiving fit — the rouching accommodates body shape variation better than straight-waisted skirts, more flattering across body types
Compared to the standard Maxi Skirt and the Mermaid Jemima Set, the asymmetric waist is the more architectural design choice — looks intentional rather than basic.
Care — Different From Cotton Pieces
Modal needs different care than cotton. The wrong washing approach can break down modal fibres faster than they need to, which leaves the skirt looking limp and worn out years before it should:
Care rules:
- Cold water only — never above 30°C
- Inside-out, mesh laundry bag if possible
- No tumble dryer — heat damages modal fibres
- Hang on a hanger (not folded over a flat rail) to dry
- Iron only on silk setting if needed (rare with modal)
Followed correctly, the skirt holds its drape and colour for years. Treated like cotton (hot wash, tumble dry), expect noticeable degradation within 6-12 months.
Modal Skirt FAQ
Is modal worth the price premium over cotton skirts?
For pieces where drape matters, yes. Modal hangs in a way cotton physically can’t — closer to silk in movement, but at a fraction of the price and care complexity. For a midi or maxi skirt where the silhouette depends on how the fabric falls, modal makes a noticeable difference. For a casual A-line midi (like our Bijou Polka), cotton poplin is fine because shape comes from the cut, not the drape.
Will the rouching come undone or stretch out?
The rouching is sewn into the seam structure — it’s not held by elastic or drawstrings that can stretch out. The fabric gather pattern is part of the construction, so it holds its shape regardless of how often the skirt is worn. The only failure mode would be a seam letting go, which is rare with double-stitched construction.
Can I wear it on a long flight without it looking destroyed when I land?
One of the strongest scenarios for this skirt. Modal recovers from sitting-creases within 10-15 minutes of standing up. Customers wear this on long-haul flights as a more polished alternative to leggings — looks pulled-together for arrival photography, comfortable enough for the actual flight.
What colours does the Asymmetric Maxi come in?
The Asymmetric Maxi is currently in chocolate brown and pear green colourways. Both photograph well; both pair cleanly with cream tops, denim, and our Mr Winston tees. The Pear Green has slightly more visible undertone variation across lighting; the Chocolate Brown reads more uniform.
