The Baseball Tee — A Brief History
The baseball tee silhouette emerged in the 1900s as a practical adaptation of the standard t-shirt for athletic use. The defining feature is the raglan sleeve — a sleeve cut diagonally from collarbone to underarm in a single piece, rather than the standard t-shirt’s straight shoulder seam. This construction allows greater range of motion through the shoulder, which mattered for throwing.
The contrast-trim styling (different-coloured collar, sleeve cuffs, and sometimes hem from the body) came later, originally serving as team identification on amateur baseball jerseys. By the 1980s, the baseball tee had crossed fully from athletic equipment into casual wear — the construction quirks that made it useful on the field also made it more comfortable than standard tees for daily wear.
What Makes This Mr Winston Take Different
Most modern baseball tees use lightweight tee-grade cotton — fine for the silhouette but lacks the substantive feel of athletic jersey wear. The Mr Winston Baseball Tee uses heavyweight cotton (closer to 220-240gsm than the typical 160gsm tee fabric), which gives it actual structure and weight on the body.
The result reads less “casual tee with sleeves,” more “premium athletic-heritage piece.” Pairs differently than a standard tee — works with smarter bottoms (chinos, dressy denim) where lighter tees would feel underdressed.
Where It Fits in Your Wardrobe
- Smart-casual contexts — when a basic tee reads too casual but a button-up reads overdressed
- Layering season — under unstructured jackets, denim jackets, or open shirts
- Streetwear styling — paired with our Heavy-Weight Trackpant for the elevated lounge look
- Statement-piece use — the contrast-trim styling does enough visual work that it carries the outfit on its own
Why the Higher Price
At $109.99, the Baseball Tee is the most-expensive tee in our range. The price reflects three concrete differences from our standard tees:
- Heavier-weight cotton — more material per garment, more substantial fabric cost
- Raglan construction — more complex pattern cutting and stitching than straight-shoulder tees
- Contrast-trim detailing — multiple fabric pieces dyed in different colours add production cost
For value comparison: the Heritage Baseball Tee is in the same price tier as our Modal Asymmetric Maxi Skirt or our Cherry T Shirt — premium-tier pieces where construction quality justifies the spend.
Baseball Tee FAQ
Does the raglan sleeve actually feel different from a standard tee sleeve?
Yes — noticeably, particularly when reaching above shoulder level or extending arms forward. The diagonal seam runs along your shoulder muscle rather than at the joint, which means the fabric stretches with movement instead of pulling against the seam. Most wearers don’t think about it consciously but report the tee being “more comfortable” for things like driving, typing, or carrying bags — all because of how the sleeve handles arm movement.
Will the contrast trim fade differently from the body?
The trim and body are separately-dyed fabrics, so they fade at different rates depending on starting saturation. Darker contrast trim (e.g. navy on white) holds saturation longer than the white body — over years, the contrast can become more visible as the body softens. Lighter contrast trim fades at similar rates to the body. Cold wash inside-out helps both pieces age evenly.
Can I tuck a baseball tee in?
Works better than slouchy tees but less cleanly than fitted tees. The raglan sleeve construction means there’s slightly more fabric volume around the shoulders that can bunch awkwardly when fully tucked. French tuck (front partial tuck) works well; full tuck depends on the bottoms — high-waisted bottoms hide the bunching, low-rise bottoms expose it.
Is this unisex or specifically women’s-cut?
Unisex-leaning. Baseball tees originate from men’s athletic wear and the cut is more boxy than fitted, which works across body types. The Mr Winston cut sits closer to “modern unisex” than “traditional men’s” or “traditional women’s” — most customers in our base wear it without much sizing complication regardless of gender.
